TITLE. Towards International Standardization of Terminology and Classification of Cleft Palate Speech/ Velopharyngeal Dysfunction
By Dr. Pereira

SYNOPSIS. Cleft palate/ velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) speech is complex, encompassing a myriad of speech features based on a wide and heterogeneous range of aetiologies. Globally, differing terminology and speech profiling systems continue to be used and current classification systems in the Speech Sound Disorder field do not sufficiently capture the complexity and full essence of complexities of cleft palate/VPD speech. This presentation attempts to unravel the different terminologies used internationally in relation to the validated approach used in the United Kingdom and elsewhere and discusses the complexities of current classification systems.
